SET’s Investment in Teacher Training, 2019

CP1 (Grade One) teachers from all SET schools in SET Teacher Workshop

Following up on their trip to Togo last year (see SET for Change, 2018) the SET team established key priorities. Because of SET’s commitment to improving the levels of literacy among primary students, these priorities related to investing in teacher training.

Hiring an educational mentor for SET teachers had already begun in Canada with telephone interviews of 13 applicants.  In Togo, from the short list of five, Jean-Paul Kodjo Mlope showed the best match to SET’s requirements.  As a professor of education and a former supervisor of schools in the SET region his knowledge base meant he could start immediately.

In the pilot project involving six SET schools Jean-Paul supervises teachers to improve and update their skills. Small group review, individual teacher counsel and workshops for SET teachers form the mandate for Jean-Paul’s part-time work.

As well as establishing a SET address in Lomé, Togo, the team met with all senior principals and school superintendents. In a private meeting with the Director of Regional Education, the members of the SET team heard his enthusiasm and full support for SET’s vision around investing in teachers.

Your new educational mentor for the SET teachers will give these dedicated teachers who are in front of their large classes encouragement, confidence and a variety of teaching skills. By investing in the strengths of these classroom teachers, you also invest in the knowledge and education of the students. Merci.
